W-Tennis: UF Secures Three Semifinals Singles Spots at Gator Fall Classic
Saturday, September 20, 2008 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida secured three of the four semifinal spots in the top singles draw of the Gator Fall Classic after a gutsy round of play during the second day of action held at the Ring Tennis Complex.
UF's Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas), Marrit Boonstra (Netherlands) and Anastasia Revzina (Russia) posted wins in Saturday morning's quarterfinal bouts to advance to Sunday's semifinal action which gets underway at 8 a.m. Admission is free.
“I was very happy with our singles play, specifically with how we have played at the end of sets throughout this tournament,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “We've done a good job of concentrating and playing with passion at the end of sets. I saw a marked improvement from yesterday.”
The 67th-ranked Boonstra again was the first Gator off the court, as she upset Kentucky's 55th-ranked Megan Broderick 6-1, 6-2. Her semifinal opponent will be Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling.
“I played much better today than I did yesterday, when I felt very nervous. I didn't feel that way at all and felt like I played well,” Boonstra shared.
On the top-half of the Flight A draw, Alexander upset top-seeded and 43rd-ranked Kelcy Tefft, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (10-6). The 70th-ranked Alexander dropped a tough opening set, as Tefft won the final two games to take the lead. She held a late break in the second, but Tefft fought it off and forced a tiebreak, which Alexander gained control early en route to taking the second. She road that momentum into the 10-point super-tiebreaker, winning the first five points and earning the hard-fought victory.
Alexander will face her teammate, 66th-ranked Revzina, who topped Kentucky's 83rd-ranked Sarah Woestmann, 7-6, 6-3.
“I knew she was a good player and was going to have to play well to win,” Revzina said. “I liked how I finished. It was a good match overall.”
In the Flight B back draw, Gator freshman Jo Mather (Duluth, Ga.) lost a hard-fought three-set decision to USF's Allyn Mueller, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6). Mather will play UCF's Isa Ohlinger for additional competition on Sunday, the final day of the event.
Two rounds of doubles where played on Saturday, when both Gator tandems won their respective quarterfinals matches, but dropped their semifinal contests.
The pair of Mather and Revzina topped USF's Janette Bejlkova and Iciri Rai, 8-6, before falling to Kentucky's 16th-ranked Caroline Lilley and Lauren Meier, 8-6.
UF's Alexander and Boonstra blanked USF's Allyn Mueller and Jessica Zok, 8-0, but lost to Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling and Kelcy Tefft, 9-8 (3).
“In doubles, we are way ahead of where we were at this time last year. We still have things to work on but I like where we are,” Thornqvist said. “We faced two good teams in doubles in the semifinals and they beat us. Sometimes that's going to happen, but I feel very good about our potential in doubles.”
