Florida's Jaeckel Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 | Volleyball
Jaeckel was named the Most Valuable Player of the Aquafina Invitational after averaging 3.86 kills per set, a .345 hitting percentage and 4.78 points per set in wins against UAB and Pacific. She became the first Florida freshman to earn MVP honors at a regular-season tournament since former All-America selection Aury Cruz was named the MVP of the Florida Volleyball Conference Challenge in 2000.
In her first collegiate match on Friday night, Jaeckel charted a double- double with a match-high 15 kills and 11 digs to complement four blocks and three service aces. On Saturday against Pacific, Jaeckel charted a match-high 12 kills on a stellar .786 hitting percentage. Her .786 efficiency clip is the third-highest hitting percentage (min. 12 kills) in school history in the rally-scoring era. She became the only non- middle blocker in the rally-scoring era to hit better than .760 in a match for the Gators.
Jaeckel, who redshirted the 2007 campaign, played on the 2008 USA A2 Blue Team that claimed the bronze medal at the USA Adult Open Volleyball Championships in Atlanta. She was the only squad member on that A2 team without a season of collegiate playing experience under her belt.
Jaeckel and the Gators return to action this weekend when they play host to the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. The Gators face Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Friday and No. 23 Long Beach State at 5 p.m. Saturday.
