W-Tennis Completes First Day of Play at Freeman Memorial Championships

The University of Florida women's tennis team completed the first day of play at the Freeman Memorial Championships with the one doubles team advancing in main draw action.
The Gator tandem of juniors Marrit Boonstra (The Netherlands) and Anastasia Revzina (Russia) upset Georgia Tech's 46th-ranked team of Sasha Krupina and Christina Ngo, 8-4, in the opening round of play. The unranked Florida pair was playing together for the first time in competitive play and advance to Saturday's action when they face Arizona State's team of Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein in the round of eight.
Boonstra and Revzina began the day in the highly competitive Flight One Singles draw, earning wins in their respective first-round matches, before falling in the round of 16.
Boonstra, ranked No. 34 in the country, defeated Arizona State's Laila Abdala, 6-1, 6-2, to begin her debut singles match of the 2009 spring, before dropping a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Baylor's 65th-ranked Jelena Stanivuk, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4
Revzina downed Stanford's Logan Hansen, 6-2, 7-6, but lost to Fresno State's 17th-ranked Melanie Gloria, 6-3, 6-4.
Also in action were Florida newcomers Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) and Barbara Pinterova (Slovakia). Both dropped their initial singles matches in the Flight Two draw and will continue play in consolation matches on Saturday.
Mather lost a 7-5, 7-6 battle to Oregon's Pavlina Smatova, while Pinterova fell against UNLV's Adrienn Hidvegi, 6-4, 7-5. The rookie duo then paired and lost to UCLA's Nina Pantic and Anna Victoria Lind, 8-4, in the Florida Two first round.
