Six Florida volleyball players were named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the Fall 2008 season, the league offices in Birmingham, Ala., announced Wednesday.
That total ties for the most SEC Academic Honor Roll selections in school history with the 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2007 teams. Additionally, senior middle blocker Kelsey Bowers (Gainesville, Fla.), the 2008 Southeastern Conference volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year and a second-team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-America selection, was one of only three Florida fall-sports athletes to earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the year.
This year's SEC Academic Honor Roll honorees were Bowers, senior defensive specialist Christina Diaz (Hollywood, Fla.), sophomore defensive specialist Erin Fleming (Orlando, Fla.), redshirt freshman outside hitter Kristy Jaeckel (Littleton, Colo.), junior middle blocker Kristina Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore outside hitter Callie Rivers (Winter Park, Fla.).
Florida's 53 SEC Academic Honor Roll recipients (all sports) is third among the SEC schools. Kentucky led with 60 named to the list, while South Carolina was second with 59.
To be recognized to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letterwinner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
