Horn Impressive in Heptathlon Debut
Saturday, January 31, 2009 | Track and Field
Florida's Gray Horn (Wapakoneta, Ohio) turned in the finest opening day by a freshman heptathlete in school history Friday and currently sits in fourth place through four events at the SEC/Big 12 Showdown in Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Horn turned in a score of 3,050, notching personal-best marks/times in three of the four events contested on Friday in the men's heptathlon – the 60-meter dash, the long jump and the shot put.
Horn's opening day performance eclipses that of Florida's school heptathlon record holder Mike Morrison. Morrison scored a then-school-record 2,968 points on the first four events of his collegiate debut on January 26, 2007.
Horn opened the day with a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.19), before placing third in the long jump (22-10.50/6.97m) and fifth in the shot put (40-9.50/12.43m). He concluded competition with a second-place finish in the high jump (6-6.25/1.99m).
Horn completes the final three events of the heptathlon beginning at 12 p.m. EST Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000-meter run.
The rest of the Gators commence their competition in the meet at 3:10 p.m. EST Saturday at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
