In conjunction with the University of Florida and Shands HealthCare, the Florida volleyball team will host its second-annual “Serving up a Cure” match Friday, Oct. 23 when the Gators take on Arkansas at 7 p.m. in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
The event helps support the Children's Miracle Network. Fans are encouraged to wear orange to the match to help raise awareness of cancer. The first 1,000 fans to the match receive free Serving up a Cure orange t-shirts courtesy of Gatorade. Also, the first 1,000 fans that attend the Gator soccer match on Thursday against LSU will receive a free admission pass to the volleyball match.
“There are so many reasons for us to give back to our community, particularly Shands, Florida head coach Mary Wise said. It is one of the greatest strengths of our area. If we can raise awareness and any money, then in a small way, we are helping the lives of those battling cancer.”
All Shands employees, affiliated doctor's offices and campus offices will receive free admission with their ID badge and admission pass that can be presented at the Gate 1 turnstile.
Also in attendance will be the University of Florida's Dance Marathon team who will be holding an attendance challenge at the match for the UF student organizations participating in UF's Dance Marathon. The organization that brings the most people from their group to the match will receive Dance Marathon spirit points and a donation towards their overall monetary total. $3.2 million was raised in the last 15 years of Dance Marathon at UF and over $413,000 was raised last year. 100 percent of the net proceeds directly benefit patients treated at Shands Children's Hospital at UF. Visit www.floridaDM.org for more details.
Shands HealthCare will also be on hand distributing information on the opening of the Shands Cancer Hospital at UF. The hospital will have an open house on Saturday, October 24 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. There will be activities for kids, a health fair with screenings and tours.
