Florida senior diver Kara Salamone (Cooper City, Fla.) and freshman swimmer Jamie Bohunicky (Gainesville, Fla.) were honored by the league Tuesday for their performances at the 2009 SMU Classic Oct. 23-24 in Dallas, Texas. Salamone garnered SEC Female Diver of the Week accolades, while Bohunicky picked up SEC Female Freshman of the Week honors.
The honor marks the first of Bohunicky's career as a Gator, while the SEC accolade is the third of Salamone's career, as she picked up SEC Diver of the Week honors twice her junior season in 2008-09.
Bohunicky helped the Gators to a first-place team finish in Dallas by securing an NCAA provisional mark with her first-place finish in the 500-yard free (4:51.52), while finishing first in her heat in both the 200 fly (2:03.37) and 200 free (1:49.33) races. Bohunicky also aided UF in a first-place 800-yard freestyle relay finish by swimming the fastest split for the Orange and Blue.
Salamone rallied for UF in the one and three-meter springboard diving competitions, finishing first on the three-meter board (314.90) and second in the one-meter competition (289.85). Both of Salamone's scores qualified her for the 2010 Zone Diving Championships, and she holds the top scores on both boards for the Gators so far in 2009.
The Lady Gators won the 2009 SMU Classic with 353 points ahead of five other NCAA-caliber teams, including Louisville (309), Wisconsin (280), Southern Methodist (271), Florida State (257) and Rice (186).
