Volleyball Finishes 2009 Season With Top-15 Ranking
Tuesday, December 22, 2009 | Volleyball
The Florida volleyball team, coming off a 25-6 overall record and its 18th NCAA regional semifinal appearance in the last 19 years, finished its 2009 season ranked among the nation's top 15 for the 19th consecutive year, as the Gators are ranked No. 15 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association final poll and No. 13 in the Volleyball Magazine final poll, it was announced Tuesday.
The Gators have accumulated 19 top-15 finishes in a row, including 14 top-10 placings and eight top-five finishes during that span. Florida has been ranked in the AVCA poll for 288 consecutive weeks dating back to Sept. 17, 1991.
The Gators' 603 wins since 1991, head coach Mary Wise's first year at Florida, are the most of any NCAA Division I volleyball program in the nation during that time period. The Gators' 19 consecutive 25-win seasons also comprise a nation-leading streak.
Three-time defending national champion Penn State (38-0) garnered each of the 60 first-place votes to rank No. 1 in the AVCA's final poll, while national runner-up Texas (29-2) was No. 2. Hawaii (32-3), Minnesota (28-9) and Nebraska (26-7) rounded out the AVCA's top five.
Penn State also topped the Volleyball Magazine final poll, while Texas was second. Hawaii, Minnesota and Nebraska also rounded out the publication's top five.
For the first time since the 1992 season, four Southeastern Conference teams were among the AVCA's final top-25 poll, as Kentucky (No. 12), Florida (No. 15), LSU (No. 19) and Tennessee (No. 24) each concluded the season with a national ranking. In all, the Gators faced seven of the AVCA's final top-25 squads over the course of the 2009 campaign.
