Men's 200 FR School Record, Divers Highlight Prelims of SECs
Wednesday, February 18, 2009 | Women's Swimming & Diving
With competition at the 2009 SEC Championships under way, a new UF record in the men's 200-yard freestyle relay and four finals qualifications in men's and women's diving competition highlighted preliminaries on day one of the four-day championship meet from Auburn University's James E. Martin Aquatics Center.
Prior to men's one-meter and women's three-meter diving preliminaries, a quartet of Florida men swam to a new school record in time trials of the men's 200-yard freestyle relay. The 1:17.60 swim was also an NCAA automatic qualifying mark and the fourth-fastest time in the country this season.
Bradley Ally (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), Brett Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands), Roberto Gomez (Weston, Fla.) and Raul Martinez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) all swam splits under 20 seconds to surpass the NCAA automatic qualifying standard (1:17.69) and former Gators Jim Kostowicz, Carlos Jayme, Hendrik Odendaal and Gabriel Mangabiera who clocked a 1:17.94 in 2002.
Freshman Anthony Lewark (Davie, Fla.) led Florida in the men's one-meter competition, securing a third-place prelims finish (323.55) for a berth to the eight-man Wednesday evening final. Freshman Colin Bell (Coral Springs, Fla.) dove to a 10th-place finish with a score of 289.40 in prelims. While neither Lewark or Bell surpassed a career-best, Lewark will aim to top his season and career-best score of 352.60 in finals.
In the women's three-meter springboard, junior Kara Salamone (Hollywood, Fla.) claimed the top spot after preliminaries and will head into finals first (335.85). Two other Gators, senior Whitney Stern (Safety Harbor, Fla.) and sophomore Monica Dodson (Franklin, Ind.) also claimed top-eight spots to qualify for the Wednesday finale. Stern finished fifth with a career-best score (316.90), while Dodson will enter finals in seventh (304.70).
Senior Jeana Bartell (Boca Raton, Fla.) narrowly missed finals, finishing 13th overall (277.60).
