UF's Cueto Named SEC Men's Tennis Freshman Of The Week
Tuesday, February 24, 2009 | Men's Tennis
University of Florida's Carlos Cueto (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) was named SEC Freshman of the Week following his performance in both singles and doubles versus No. 37 University of South Florida and No. 24 University of Miami. Cueto is the first Gator to receive league recognition this season.
Cueto began the season ranked No. 87 and has jumped to No. 24 in the latest ITA poll. He is 19-4 since beginning at Florida in September. The freshman has made an immediate impact, playing on court one on every match that he has participated in and is currently 6-2 in dual matches. This weekend, Cueto defeated No. 53 Lucas Jovita in a three-set thriller in Gainesville. Cueto took an early 6-4 advantage in the first set, but began to suffer from cramps in the second set, falling 0-6 to his opponent. In front of a supportive and cheering crowd, Cueto battled back through obvious pain to defeat Jovita, 11-9, and seal the sweep for Florida. In a match just two days later, the Spaniard easily defeated Miami's Christian Bloecker, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles action, Cueto and his partner, Alex Lacroix, are currently 9-1 together and a perfect 8-0 in dual matches. They have won eight straight matches since their first and only loss together in September. This past weekend, the pair defeated USF's Jamal Adderley and Yannick Yoshizawa in just 28 minutes, 8-3. They also clinched the doubles point for Florida on Sunday, downing Miami's Keith Crowley and David Rosenfeld, 9-7.
The No. 12 UF men's tennis team returns to action on March 3, when they travel to Tallahassee to face No. 16 FSU at 5 p.m.
