The University of Florida women's tennis team collected a 5-2 road victory over Vanderbilt Sunday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center.
The Gators (7-5, 1-1 SEC) won the doubles point in thrilling fashion, as the No. 2 team of Marrit Boonstra and Joanna Mather battled past Catherine Newman and Chelsea Preeg, 9-8. Jessica Alexander and Anastasia Revzina dominated the No. 1 position over Jackie Wu and Heather Steinbaurer, 8-1, to setup the clinching heroics at the No. 2 spot.
Florida then earned straight set singles victories on each of the top four courts to secure the SEC road win. Alexander provided the first singles win of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Preeg. Vanderbilt (4-2, 1-1 SEC) got the win on court 6, but Boonstra then polished off Newman 6-4, 6-0 on the showcase court, before Revzina provided the clinching win at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-5 victory over Wu, shortly before Mather took down Keilly Ulery, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 position.
“We played very well. We talked a great deal about being tough, about being resilient and being competitive and we showed all of those things,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “It was very windy today and the weather wasn't great, but we handled both and were tough mentally. We battled through the adversity and the momentum changes. If we continue to battle and compete like this, we will continue to get better and better. We're a very good ball-striking team. If we can combine that with the tough attitude we had today, we can be a very good team. I'm very proud of how we responded to Friday's loss at Kentucky.”
Florida next returns to Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex, where the Gators play host to No. 2 Georgia on Friday at 5 p.m., before entertaining Tennessee on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to all regular season home matches is free.
