Women's Tennis Falls to Georgia in SEC Tournament Semifinal, 4-2
Saturday, April 25, 2009 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis team came up just short of upsetting third-ranked Georgia in the semifinals of the Southeastern Conference Tournament, falling 4-2 Saturday at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
The 15th-ranked Gators (14-9) next await word of their postseason fate, with the selections of the 64-team NCAA Championship field announced on Tue., April 28 on ESPNews.
Florida upset Georgia, 4-3, during the regular season but was unable to find that one extra victory needed to earn a spot in Sunday's SEC Tournament final.
The Gators played outstanding doubles and captured the initial point of the dual match.
Georgia (22-2) came right back and tied the score with a victory at the No. 6 singles position, before Gator junior Anastasia Revzina topped Yvette Hyndman, 6-1, 6-1, on court No. 2 to put Florida back in the lead.
Unfortunately for the Gators, the top-seeded Lady Bulldogs turned in the next three victories, as Florida fell at the Nos. 3, 5 and then 1 positions, capped by the hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 decision by UG's Chelsey Gullickson over Marrit Boonstra.
“I thought we played well. Georgia was tough,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “We played very well in doubles and had to dig deep. We ran out of juice in the end. I thought Chelsey (Gullickson) played a great third set. You have to tip your hat to Georgia. They played well.”
UF's Jessica Alexander had a 2-0 lead in the deciding third set over Monika Dancevic when play was halted.

POST MATCH QUOTES
Georgia Head Coach Jeff Wallace:
“Florida played great in doubles. They whipped us, but I was impressed with how our team came back in singles. We lost the doubles point down there this year and since then we've been able to win the doubles point in every match until today. I told them you're not always going to win the doubles point and you'll have to come back strong in singles like we did. We've got pretty good depth. We got wins at No. 5 and No. 6, and two from our freshman in Nadja (Gilchrist) and Chelsey (Gullickson) at the top with the match on the line.”
Florida Head Coach Roland Thornqvist:
