Thursday, June 4, 2009 | Track and Field
University of Florida women's javelin throwers Evelien Dekkers (Etten-Leur, Netherlands) and Star Sansone (Boca Raton, Fla.) each have been named to the 2009 College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN The Magazine Women's Track and Field Academic All-District teams, it was announced Thursday afternoon.
Dekkers was named to the Academic All-District III first team, while Sansone was a second-team selection. By virtue of being a first-team all-district selection, Dekkers becomes eligible for consideration for Academic All-America status.
“This is a great accomplishment for both Evelien and Star,” Florida throws coach Steve Lemke said. “We constantly emphasize the balance between academics and athletics, and this recognition shows that hard work, not only on the field, but in the classroom, does pay off.”
Dekkers, the two-time defending Southeastern Conference javelin champion, holds a 3.82 grade point average in food science and human nutrition with a minor in business administration. She currently is ranked ninth in the nation in the women's javelin throw with a toss of 173-11/53.02m, recorded at the 2009 SEC Championships.
Dekkers, who automatically qualified for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships, holds the second-best javelin throw in school history and was a 2008 NCAA Outdoor Academic All-America selection. She is a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Sansone was a 2009 NCAA regional qualifier in the javelin after finishing sixth at the SEC Outdoor Championships with a throw of 142-5/43.40m. She finished the year ranked fifth in the league in the women's javelin and ranks third on Florida's all-time list in that event. She holds a 3.97 grade point average, seeking her master's degree in accounting after earning a bachelor's degree in the same subject.
Florida is a member of CoSIDA District 3, which encompasses the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
