THE SCOOP
Intrastate rivals Florida and Florida State square off for the 48th time in the history of the two programs when they take the court Monday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. EST in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. The Gators will be looking for their 18th consecutive win against the Seminoles.
Florida State is in its second year under head coach Chris Poole, the architect of the Arkansas volleyball program from its inception. The Seminoles return six starters from their 2008 roster, including senior middle blocker Brianna Barry, who averaged 2.83 kills per set on a squad-best .349 hitting. The only non-returning starter on the FSU roster is senior Ashlee Moon, a 2008 All-ACC Second Team selection at libero, who averaged 4.86 digs per set.
Second team All-ACC selection Lauren Richardson also returns after averaging a team-best 3.00 kills per set a year ago. She also ranked second with 290 digs and tied Moon with 24 service aces. In ACC action, Richardson finished the year ranked ninth in the conference with a 3.14 kills per set average.
Similar to the Gators, the Seminoles will host a two-day home tournament prior to taking on Florida. FSU plays host to Central Michigan, Florida A&M and North Dakota State Aug. 28-29.
YOU LOOK FAMILIAR
Florida has met Florida State more than any other non-conference rival in school history. Additionally, the series with the Seminoles is the third longest rivalry overall in Florida school history. When the Gators and Noles square off on Aug. 31, it will mark the 48th all-time meeting between the two teams, with Florida holding a 31-16 advantage.
