Former Gator Kerron Clement Wins 400mH World Championship
Tuesday, August 18, 2009 | Track and Field
Former University of Florida track and field standout Kerron Clement captured the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Athletics title in the men's 400-meter hurdles on Tuesday at Berlin, Germany, clocking the fastest time in the world this season with a 47.91 clip.
The title was Clement's second consecutive in the event, a feat also achieved in the history of the event by the legendary Edwin Moses in 1983 and 1987, and Felix Sanchez in 2001 and 2003.
“Today was a great experience for me,” Clement said. “The race plan was to go out quick and run 13 strides all the way to the finish. I knew that if I was in the lead with 150m to go, no one would be able to get me.”
Clement, who was an 11-time All-American at Florida, also is expected to participate in the men's 4x400-meter relay at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics.
Former Gator sprinter Novlene Williams-Mills notched a season-best time of 49.77 in the finals of the women's 400-meter dash to place fourth overall in the event.
