University of Florida newcomers Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) captured singles victories to highlight the second day of play for the Gators at the 2009 SEC Coaches Fall Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University at the Currey Tennis Center on Saturday.
Will chalked up her second consecutive victory over a nationally ranked opponent, as she topped South Carolina's 29th-ranked Ana Zubori, who retired after the Gator rookie held a 7-5, 4-6, 3-1 lead in the second round match. Bartlett collected her win against South Carolina's Josefin Andersson, 7-5, 6-3.
Will also netted an impressive victory on the doubles court, where she and senior Anastasia Revzina (Russia) downed Alabama's 43rd-ranked Courtney McLane and Alexa Guarachi, 8-4.
In singles action, Revzina dropped a 6-3, 6-2 score to Vanderbilt's 46th-ranked Catherine Newman, while Gator sophomore Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) fell to Alabama's Guarachi, 6-4, 6-3, and UF freshman Brittany Borsanyi (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) was on the short end of her match to Alabama's Alice Tunaru, 6-1, 6-3.
Borsanyi teamed with fellow rookie Caroline Hitimana (Belgium) in doubles, where the pair dropped an 8-6 decision to Auburn's Vukadinovic and Schreimann, while Bartlett and Mather fell to Vanderbilt's Newman and Steinbauer, 9-7.
“We were a little up and down as a group today,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “It's clear that this is the first competition of the year. I'm really pleased with our fitness for a second day and think we can be a very physical team on the court. Our effort is magnificent, while we lack in execution a bit, but we're trying very hard and I look forward to seeing how we come out tomorrow.”
Action concludes on Sunday, when play resumes with the final round of singles and doubles.
