THREE POWER CONFERENCES COLLIDE AT TEXAS A&M CHALLENGE
Following a week off from competition, the University of Florida track and field teams return to action Friday and Saturday when they travel to College Station, Texas, to participate in the Texas A&M Challenge, hosted by Texas A&M University at its Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium. The meet will feature three top teams from three power conferences - the Big 12 Conference, the Pacific-10 Conference and the Southeastern Conference.
This weekend's meet will have an interesting twist to it as it will be a rare scored regular-season event. It won't be scored by team, though, like an SEC or NCAA Championship meet. It will instead be scored by conference. Points will be awarded on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis (similar to championship scoring) – and the winning conference will be declared at the end of competition.
Participating teams at the prestigious meet include: Arkansas, Baylor Florida, South Carolina, Stanford, Texas, host Texas A&M, Oregon and Washington State.
Activities get underway at 7 p.m. ET Friday with the start of the multi-events, and the meet continues at 12 p.m. ET Saturday. Live results will be available through Texas A&M's Web site at www.AggieAthletics.com.
ABOUT THE VENUE
Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium is in only its second year of existence after opening in 2009. The facility served as host to the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships. It will mark the third time that Florida has competed in the facility after participating in the SEC/Big 12 Showdown and the NCAA Indoor Championships last season. Aside from the six-lane, 200-meter hydraulically banked competition track, the facility features eight independent sprint lanes, two long and triple jump sand pits, four pole vault runways, and two throwing rings. Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium features a pre-engineered bleacher system with press boxes and portable grandstands to seat over 4,100 and is furnished with two press boxes, fully operating concessions, and restroom facilities for meets and other events.
ABOUT THE CITY
College Station, located in central Texas, is within 200 miles of three major metropolitan areas - Houston (95.1 miles), San Antonio (169 miles) and Dallas (197 miles). Two other cities - Austin (107.7 miles) and Fort Worth (173 miles) also are within that range. College Station itself did not incorporate as a city until the 1930s, but rather was a part of the Bryan, Texas, area. The Houston and Texas Central Railway built in the 1800s stopped just short of Bryan, thus letting students traveling to the school off at the “college station.” When a post office for the university was opened in 1877 near the tracks it took the name of College Station. It is also currently the home of the George Bush, Sr., Presidential Library.
