Kelly Murphy Named Academic All-District
Thursday, November 4, 2010 | Volleyball
Junior Florida right-side/setter Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.) has been named a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team selection for her strong performances in the classroom and on the court, the organization announced Thursday afternoon.
Murphy, a two-year member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Rolls, holds a 3.30 grade point average in elementary education. She also is a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American, including garnering a second-team nod in 2009, and was the 2008 AVCA National Freshman of the Year.
Murphy, who has accumulated 21 career triple-doubles, currently is the only player this season to rank in the SEC's top-10 individually in three different statistical categories. She leads the team and ranks eighth in the SEC (all matches combined) with 3.23 per set. She is hitting at a .382 hitting efficiency clip, which ranks third in the conference, while leading the SEC with 0.39 service aces per set. In conference matches only, Murphy is fifth in the league with 3.53 kills per set, second in hitting percentage with a sizzling .416 clip and first in service aces with 0.49 per set.
Additionally, Murphy averages 5.43 assists per set, 2.20 digs per set and 0.68 blocks per set, charting a squad-best 3.97 points per set on the 2010 campaign.
Murphy has played in 83 career matches at Florida and ranks ninth in school history with 1,772 career assists. That's an especially impressive feat considering she has spent all but six matches of her collegiate career setting in just three rotations as part of a 6-2 offensive scheme. Murphy also is 21st in school history with 911 career kills, looking to become just the 17th player in program history to achieve 1,000 career kills. On Oct. 15 against Auburn, Murphy became just the 29th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau and she currently ranks 24th in school history with 1,074.5 total points.
Florida is a member of CoSIDA District 3, which encompasses the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Since the 2005 season, the Gators have earned 11 CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.
Murphy and the No. 1 Gators return to action on Friday, when they travel to Athens, Ga., to take on Georgia. Opening serve is slated for 7 p.m. ET and the match will be carried live on 103.7 FM The Gator with Cory Stephens.
