Numerous Collegiate PRs for Gators at Jimmy Carnes Meet
Monday, February 1, 2010 | Track and Field
Six Florida track and field athletes recorded collegiate best marks/times Sunday to highlight the Gators' participation in the 2010 Jimmy Carnes Indoor Track Meet at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
Junior Daniela Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.), jumping in just the second meet of her life, bettered her personal-record mark by more than a meter-and-a-half to finish fourth overall in the women's triple jump with a leap of 11.94m/39-2.25. That bested her previous personal record of 10.23m/33-6.75. Fellow triple jumper Jenicia McFadden (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) also eclipsed her collegiate PR with a jump of 10.34m/33-11.50.
Freshman high jumper Rebecca Goldring (Parkland, Fla.), competing in her second collegiate meet, placed fourth with a jump of 1.60m/5-3, just shy of her personal-record mark of 5-6.
Freshman pole vaulter Max Lang (Tallahassee, Fla.) tied for fifth in the event, with a leap of 4.35m/14-3.25. That's a collegiate-best mark, topping his mark of 4.30m/14-1.25 from the Kentucky Invitational.
Junior pole vaulter Daisy Glasser (Atlantic Beach, Fla.), competing in her first meet of 2010, tied for second in the women's pole vault with a leap of 3.77m/12-4.50. Fellow pole vaulters Caitlin Schuessler (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Claire Spurling (Jacksonville, Fla.) each had collegiate-best marks at 3.52m/11-6.50, which tied for fourth.
Additional Florida athletes participated in the meet as unattached competitors.
The meet is named in honor of legendary former University of Florida head men's track and field coach Jimmy Carnes (1965-76), who later went on to a distinguished career as a key contributor and advocate for track and field on the national and international level. He recently was inducted into USA Track and Field's National Hall of Fame.
During Carnes' 12-year tenure as Florida's head track and field coach, he directed the Gators to 15 top-three finishes at the Southeastern Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships combined, including SEC indoor championships in each of his final two seasons as the program's head coach. Carnes' Florida teams went 93-3 overall in dual meets during his career.
Carnes mentored 65 Southeastern Conference individual champions (indoor and outdoor) and 24 All-America selections during his tenure as Florida's head coach. He also mentored Ron Jourdan (High Jump, 1969), Earmonn O'Keefe (1,000 yd, 1972), Beaufort Brown (600 yd, 1973) and the men's mile relay (1975) to indoor national championships during his coaching career with the Gators.
The Gators are back in action this weekend at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet. The two-day meet begins Friday in Blacksburg, Va.
