2010 SECs: Day 3 Morning Session
Friday, February 19, 2010 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Heading into day three in second place in both the men's and women's competitions, the Gators concluded a successful day in preliminaries to set both teams up for an exciting finals session Friday evening. With 21 finals swims and 14 consolation races, Florida will aim to regain the lead over the Auburn men and Georgia women.
Four UF swimmers solidified a first-place seed in their respective events in the morning session, including sophomore Teresa Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.), freshman Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa), junior Conor Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill.) and freshman Marco Loughran (London, England). While all swam season-best swims, Loughran swam Florida's only NCAA automatic mark in prelims, turning in a 46.05 100-yard backstroke race. The freshman also qualified for the sixth seed in the men's 100-yard fly. Dwyer, the 2010 500-yard free champion, qualified as the No. 1 seed in the 200-yard free after swimming the fifth-fastest 200 free this year (1:34.63). Gator junior Brett Fraser (George Town, Grand Cayman) qualified second in the 200 free behind Dwyer. Crippen and Rousseau represented the Orange and Blue in the 400-yard IM races, each winning the preliminary round of the event.
A highlight of the morning for the UF men was the seven returners in the 200-yard free, four up in the championship heat, and three down in the consolation final. Freshman Jeff Raymond (Davie, Fla.) and junior Balazs Gercsak (Budapest, Hungary) will join Dwyer and Fraser in the championship final.
In women's action, four other Gators will join Crippen in the 400 IM finals, including sophomores Kirsten Smith (Cary, N.C.), Anna Pold (San Diego, Fla.) and freshmen Corinne Showalter (Sarasota, Fla.) and Eva Lehtonen (Rochester Hills, Mich.).
Additionally, senior Gemma Spofforth (West Sussex, England) will look to defend her title in the 100-yard back for the third consecutive year, while both Florida men's divers, sophomores Colin Bell (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Anthony Lewark (Davie, Fla.) will compete in the platform after placing fifth and third in prelims, respectively.
Finals of the men's platform, the men's and women's 400 IM, 200 free, 100 fly, 100 breast, 100 back and 400-yard medley relays will kick off at 6 p.m. Thursday.
