Track and Field Heads to Fayetteville Looking for SEC Titles
Wednesday, February 24, 2010 | Track and Field
The University of Florida track and field teams embark on Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend to compete in the three-day Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center hosted by the University of Arkansas. The Gators will be looking for their first league indoor championships since the 2004 campaigns.
The meet begins at 2 p.m. ET Friday with the multi-events and continues at 11 a.m. ET on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Live results will be available at www.flashresults.com and complete up-to-the-minute coverage will be available at www.twitter.com/GZTrackField.
The Gators enter the meet ranked No. 3 nationally on the women's side and No. 4 in the nation on the men's side according to the latest poll from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Florida's men have been rated among the nation's top-five nationally the entire season, while the women's team has been in the top 10 all year long.
The SEC Indoor Championships will feature a highly competitive field as seven men's teams and five women's teams within the league rank among the nation's top 25. The Florida men's and women's teams each have won five SEC indoor titles in program history.
“We have high expectations of what the Gator men's and women's teams can do this weekend,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “I really expect it to be a close competition on both sides. I'm excited and our team is excited about this weekend. We're going to go in and put our best foot forward and I promise that, at the end of the weekend, the Gator Nation is going to be proud of what we accomplished.”
Senior thrower Mariam Kevkhishvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) looks to win her 12th consecutive indoor shot put competition dating back to the 2008 season. The 2009 SEC Indoor Champion, Kevkhishvili's last loss indoors came at the 2008 SEC Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. She currently leads the conference and the nation with a mark of 18.56m/60-11.75. She holds both the Florida indoor school record and the SEC indoor meet record in the women's shot put.
Sophomore multi-event athlete Gray Horn (Waynesfield, Ohio), the 2009 Southeastern Conference decathlon champion, will compete in his second heptathlon of the 2010 season and looks to claim the event after finishing second at the SEC Championships a year ago. Horn, who ranks second all-time in Florida school history in the heptathlon, looks to best his personal-record score of 5,586, achieved at last season's conference championships.
Junior distance runner Charlotte Browning (Pullborough, England) will challenge for the SEC mile crown this weekend, as she currently holds the top time in the nation and the 11th-best mark in the world so far this season at 4:31.24. Browning is an automatic qualifier for the upcoming NCAA indoor championships.
Freshman sprinter Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) is a two-time SEC Male Freshman of the Week selection this season and currently holds the nation's top time in the men's 60-meter dash. Demps won the 60m at the prestigious Tyson Invitational and co-holds the school record in that event with teammate Terrell Wilks.
Senior jumper Shara Proctor (The Valley, Anguilla) is the defending SEC indoor women's triple jump champion and won both the triple jump and the long jump at the 2009 SEC Outdoor Championships. Proctor currently leads the conference and ranks in the top-two nationally in both events.
The Randal Tyson Indoor Track and Field Facility in Fayetteville, Ark., served as the host of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships from 2000-08 and will again host the national meet in 2010. The facility also has served as the home of the 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2007 SEC Indoor Championships. The six-lane banked oval has been touted by insiders and the casual fan as perhaps the fastest indoor track in the world thanks to its steep curves and long straightaways and, the numbers back it up as 11 of 20 NCAA Championship running records have been broken on its surface.
