The University of Florida track and field teams begin their NCAA Championship quest on Thursday when they travel to Greensboro, N.C., to participate in the three-day NCAA Preliminary Rounds hosted by North Carolina A&T University at its Irwin Belk Track.
The fields in Greensboro will consist of 48 athletes in each of the individual events and 24 teams in each of the relays. The goal will be to be one of the top-12 individuals or relay teams at the end of the weekend that will earn a trip to Eugene, Ore., June 9-12 to participate in the NCAA outdoor Championships. The 12 in each event from Greensboro and the 12 in each event from Austin, Texas, site of the West Preliminary Rounds, will comprise the 24 athlete and relay team fields that will compete at historic Hayward Field to vie for the national title.
The 2010 campaign marks the first season of the NCAA preliminary rounds, following seven years of the regional (four-region) format.
Activities begin at 10 a.m. ET Thursday and continue at 10 a.m. ET Friday and 9:30 a.m. ET Saturday. Live results will be available at www.flashresults.com. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling (336) 334-7749 or at the Irwin Belk Track on meet day. Three-day ticket passes are available for $25 for adults, $15 for students and senior citizens and free for those 12 and under. Single-day passes are available for $10 for adults, $7 for students and senior citizens and free for those 12 and under.
The Gators enter the meet ranked among the nation's top 10 on the men's and women's sides, as they have all season, as determined by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll. The Florida men are the nation's No. 1 ranked team, while the women are ranked No. 6 nationally.
UF begins the NCAA Outdoor Championships after an impressive indoor campaign that saw the Gators place in the top-four nationally on both sides. The Florida men are the 2010 NCAA Indoor Champions, while the Gator women placed fourth at the event in Fayetteville, Ark., this past March.
The Florida men enter the preliminary rounds leading the East Region in six different events – Kemal Mesic (men's shot put), Calvin Smith (men's 400m dash), Christian Taylor (men's LJ), Christian Taylor (men's TJ), men's 4x100m relay and men's 4x400m relay. The women's team leads the East Region in three different events – Charlotte Browning (women's 1,500m run), Mariam Kevkhishvili (women's shot put), Shara Proctor (women's long jump).
The Gator men are coming off their first Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championship since 1987, having won the event two weeks ago at Tom Black Track in Knoxville, Tenn. The Florida women placed second at the event after claiming the SEC Indoor Championship this past March.
