Track and Field Advances Five More to Eugene
Saturday, May 29, 2010 | Track and Field
The Florida track and field team increased its number of qualifiers to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Ore., to 12, advancing five more competitors on Friday, a rain-shortened day at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T University.
The meet was halted at around 8:25 p.m. ET Saturday following the women's 200-meter dash first round, due to a severe thunderstorm warning in the area. A driving rain ensued to end the day's activities. The men's and women's steeplechase events were the only remaining events not contested on Friday's schedule, and will commence beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET Saturday in Greensboro.
“I'm very, very pleased with our team's effort and focus this weekend,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “This can be a difficult meet if you come in and don't put your best foot forward right away. We have shown a very high level of intensity and focus this weekend. We're qualifying well and giving ourselves a lot of opportunities for Eugene, and that's what it's all about.”
Junior thrower Kemal Mesic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) placed first in qualifying for the men's shot put to punch his ticket to Eugene. He recorded a mark of 19.16m/62-10.50 on his third attempt and then passed each of the attempts in the finals.
Sprinters Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) and Terrell Wilks (New Haven, Conn.) each qualified for the semifinal round of the men's 100-meter dash, to be contested in Eugene. Demps placed fourth overall in the quarterfinals, equaling his season-best time at 10.06 (+1.3), while Wilks was ninth overall in 10.28 (+1.3).
Later in the evening, Wilks qualified for the NCAA quarterfinal round of the men's 200m dash, placing fourth overall in the first round and clocking a time of 20.76. The quarterfinals of the 200m are slated for 7:35 p.m. ET Saturday.
Senior sprinter Calvin Smith (Lutz, Fla.) and freshman Tony McQuay (Riviera Beach, Fla.) each advanced to the semifinals of the men's 400-meter dash. Smith was second overall in the quarterfinals in a time of 45.06, while McQuay was 10th overall in 45.73.
The final day of the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds begins at 9:30 a.m. ET Saturday from Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T University. Complete results and a recap will be available at www.GatorZone.com.
