Gators Win Two Events at Seminole Twilight
Saturday, May 8, 2010 | Track and Field
Freshman Florida thrower Ashley Miller (Miami, Fla.) turned in the 10th-best women's discus throw in program history and the Gator track and field team won two events on the opening day of the Seminole Twilight Invitational hosted by Florida State University at its Mike Long Track.
“We got some good things done today,” Florida associate head coach/throws Steve Lemke said. “We knew it was just a matter of time before Ashley Miller did something special. That gives her some great momentum going into the SEC meet. It was also a good day for Mario Ariet in his first competition of the year coming off shoulder surgery with both of them being potential scorers at the SEC meet. We're looking forward to more good things tomorrow.”
Miller picked up her first collegiate victory with the discus win, using a personal-record toss of 51.53m/169-0. That mark shattered her previous personal-record throw of 45.94m/150-9, charted at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic on April 17. Junior thrower Keely Medeiros (Luziana, Brazil) placed second in that event with a throw of 48.43m/158-10, while freshman Kaitlin Davis (Niceville, Fla.) was fourth.
Thrower Mario Ariet (Gainesville, Fla.), in his first meet of the 2010 campaign, captured the men's javelin event with a toss of 66.35m/217-8, while Doug Nelson (Tampa, Fla.) was third with a mark of 62.448m/206-2.
Junior thrower Kemal Mesic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) turned in a season-best throw of 53.67m/176-1 to place third in the men's discus competition, while freshman David Triassi (Jacksonville, Fla.) was sixth overall.
The second day of the Seminole Twilight Invitational continues at 10 a.m. ET Saturday from Mike Long Track in Tallahassee. Live results will be available at www.halfmiletiming.com.
