Gators Claim Six Events to Conclude Seminole Twilight
Sunday, May 9, 2010 | Track and Field
Senior Florida thrower Mariam Kevkhishvili (Tallahassee, Fla.) shattered the Mike Long Track record to lead a 1-2-3 finish in the women's shot put Saturday and the Gators picked up six victories on the final day of the Seminole Twilight Invitational hosted by Florida State University.
Over the course of the weekend, Florida captured eight events and set numerous personal-best times and marks in the final tune-up before the Southeastern Conference Championships commence on Thursday.
Kevkhishvili claimed the women's shot put with a toss of 18.17m/59-7.50, shattering the previous stadium record of 17.94m/58-10.25 set by Kim Barrett of Miami in 2005. Sophomore Fidela James (Jacksonville, Fla.) turned in a personal-record throw of 15.84m/51-11.75 - that mark was just outside of Florida's all-time top-10 list - while junior Keely Medeiros (Luziana, Brazil) was third with a throw of 15.37m/50-2.25.
James had an exceptional day, also recording a personal-record throw of 46.42m/152-3 to place second in the women's hammer throw event.
Junior pole vaulter Daisy Glasser (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) won the women's pole vault with a season-best leap of 3.97m/13-0.25, while sophomore Claire Spurling (Jacksonville, Fla.) was fifth in the event.
Freshman sprinter Jeremy Rankin (Aurora, Colo.) clocked a collegiate-best time in the men's 100-meter dash, winning the event in 10.52 (+1.3). That bettered his previous personal-record time of 10.58 (-0.3), charted at the UCF Invitational on March 27.
Pole vaulter Eric Foran (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) won the men's pole vault elite section with a season-best leap of 4.80m/15-9, while freshman Max Lang (Tallahassee, Fla.) was the runner-up with a vault of 4.65m/15-3.
Freshman Bryan Turner (Gainesville, Fla.) won the men's high jump with a leap of 2.05m/6-8.75, while Frankie Hammond (Hollywood, Fla.) was third at 2.00m/6-6.75.
Freshmen Sean Obinwa (Tampa, Fla.) and John Mitchell (Plant City, Fla.) each set personal-record times of 49.31 and 49.56, respectively, in the men's 400-meter dash.
Michael Anderson (Williston, Fla.) ran a personal-best time of 3:48.37 in the men's 1,500m run, while senior Carlos Phillips (Winter Park, Fla.) matched his season-best of 47.28 in the men's 400m.
Florida returns to action Thursday, May 13, when it begins competition in the four-day SEC Championships. The event will be held at Tom Black Track on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.
