Proctor All-America Honor Highlights Day Two
Friday, June 11, 2010 | Track and Field
Senior Florida jumper Shara Proctor (The Valley, Anguilla) placed third in the women's triple jump to earn All-America honors and the Gators qualified two additional scoring opportunities to the finals of their respective events to highlight the second day of the NCAA Championships contested in front of 11,172 fans Thursday at historic Hayward Field.
Proctor recorded a season-best leap of 13.62m/44-8.25 (+1.9) on her second attempt to place third overall in the women's triple jump, marking her highest-finish ever in that event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
“I thought we had a great day today,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “I was very happy with Shara's performance in the long jump and was very, very pleased with the 4x4. Gray [Horn] got off to a little bit of a rough start, but he is still in a position to score if he comes out and competes hard tomorrow. Also, for Josh [Izewski] and Julie [Northrup] to both come into their first NCAA meets and run lifetime bests, I thought they did a great job. Up to this point, we've done what we needed to do. Tomorrow and Saturday are big scoring opportunities for us and we just need to show up and compete hard like we have done all year long.”
Senior distance runner Charlotte Browning (Pullborough, England), the 2010 Southeastern Conference 1,500-meter run champion, advanced to the finals of the women's 1,500-meter run after placing ninth overall in the semifinal round by clocking a 4:16.77. The finals of the women's 1,500m take place Saturday at 1:18 p.m. ET/10:18 a.m. PT.
The Florida men's 4x400-meter relay team, the 2010 Southeastern Conference Champion, advanced to the finals of the event by clocking a time of 3:03.34 in the preliminaries to move on to Saturday's 2:50 p.m. ET/11:50 a.m. PT final. The quartet, which recorded the fastest time in Thursday's preliminaries, consisted of R.J. Anderson (Big Pine Key, Fla.), Tony McQuay (Riviera Beach, Fla.), Christian Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Calvin Smith (Lutz, Fla.).
Senior distance runner Julie Northrup (Vero Beach, Fla.) ran the second-fastest time in school history at 10:20.58 to place 18th overall in the semifinal round of the women's steeplechase. Northrup shattered her previous personal-record time of 10:23.53 on Thursday, but did not advance to the event finals.
Freshman distance runner Josh Izewski (Doylestown, Pa.) ran a lifetime personal-best time and the eighth-fastest 10,000-meter race in school history, placing 18th overall in 29:37.85.
Sophomore decathlete Gray Horn (Waynesfield, Ohio) currently sits in 14th place through the opening five events of the men's decathlon. He totaled a score of 3,789 over the opening day of the event and, the remaining five events commence at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT Friday.
Junior sprinter Terrell Wilks (New Haven, Conn.) placed 14th in the semifinals of the men's 200-meter dash in a time of 21.17 (+1.1). He failed to advance to the finals of that event.
The third day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships commences at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on Friday from Hayward Field. Complete results and a recap will be available at www.GatorZone.com.
