Wednesday, June 16, 2010 | Volleyball
University of Florida head volleyball coach Mary Wise embarks on Tijuana, Mexico, this week to serve as the team leader for Team USA at the IX Women's Pan American Cup June 18-26. The event is a qualifier into the 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix. The top-three teams from NORCECA and the top South American team earn spots.
Team USA opens Pool B on June 18 against Peru at 3 p.m. PT, followed by Puerto Rico on June 19 at 3 p.m. The Americans continue pool play against Colombia on June 20 at 6 p.m. PT and Costa Rica on June 21 at 6 p.m. PT. The U.S. concludes pool play against tournament host Mexico on June 22 at 7 p.m. PT. The June 20 and June 21 matches will be played in the second venue located in nearby Rosarita, while the others will be played in Tijuana.
Wise serves as the team leader which, essentially, is the liaison between the delegation (players, coaches, support staff) and the control committee, which runs the tournament.
Wise, an 11-time Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year, is entering her 20th season at the helm of Florida's program. She has directed the Gators to more victories since the 1991 season (603) than any other program in the nation during that same span.
Wise has led her Florida squads to 18 SEC regular-season championships and 19 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The Gators have advanced to the NCAA regional semifinals in 18 of those 19 seasons, including seven national semifinal appearances. Under her direction, Florida leads the nation in consecutive 25-win seasons with 19.
