Calvin Smith Advances to USA Championship 400m Semis

Senior Florida sprinter Calvin Smith (Lutz, Fla.) placed second in his heat to automatically advance to the semifinals of the men's 400-meter dash and highlight the Gators' performances on Thursday at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Smith clocked a time of 45.84 in the 400-meter first round and automatically qualified for the semifinal round to be contested at 7 p.m. ET Friday. Fellow Gator senior R.J. Anderson (Big Pine Key, Fla.) was 19th overall in the 400-meter first round in a time of 46.67 and did not advance to the semifinals.
Former Gator and Olympian Kerron Clement, also competing in the men's 400-meter dash, advanced to the semifinal round, clocking a time of 46.52.
Former Gator and Olympian Hazel Clark placed 10th overall in the first round of the women's 800-meter run. She clocked a time of 2:02.45 and advanced on time to the semifinals, which will take place at 7:15 p.m. ET Friday.
Former Florida distance runner Mason Cathey, competing for the Indiana Invaders, placed 18th in the preliminary round of the women's steeplechase in a time of 10:23.14, but failed to advance.
Activities at the USA Track and Field Championships resume at 10 a.m. ET Friday.
