Three Gator Relay Teams Honored by ACCUSPLIT
Tuesday, June 8, 2010 | Track and Field
Florida head coach Mike Holloway and the Gator track and field teams received three ACCUSPLIT Relay Awards for posting the nation's top collegiate times in 2010 in the men's 4x100-meter relay, 4x200-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay. The awards were presented on Monday night at the annual ACCUSPLIT/Nike Coaches Party prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
The 2010 season marked the 28th consecutive year that ACCUSPLIT honored teams with the relay awards.
ACCUSPLIT presented relay awards for eight different events on both the men's and women's sides, and they were based on the nation's top times entering the NCAA Championship meet.
The Florida men's 4x100-meter relay, the defending NCAA Outdoor Champion, posted the nation's fastest time (38.81) at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds in Greensboro, N.C. The quartet of Chris Rainey (Lakeland, Fla.), Jeremy Hall (Jacksonville , Fla.), Terrell Wilks (New Haven, Conn.) and Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) charted the fastest time in the NCAA quarterfinal round and enters the upcoming championships as the No. 1 seed. That time of 38.81 is one of the top-10 times in the world in 2010.
The men's 4x200-meter relay team set a new Florida school record at the Pepsi Florida Relays, clocking a time of 1:20.38. That also broke the Florida Relays meet record and the Percy Beard Track facility record. The Gators shattered the previous school record of 1:20.94 set during the 2005 season. The relay group, which consisted of Tony McQuay (Riviera Beach, Fla.), Hall, Wilks and Calvin Smith (Lutz, Fla.), also placed second overall at the prestigious Penn Relays this season.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team holds the fastest time in the world this season with a school-record-setting time of 3:00.31, set at the Pepsi Florida Relays. The relay group of R.J. Anderson (Big Pine Key, Fla.), McQuay, Christian Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Smith captured the 2010 SEC Outdoor Championships, marking the school's first outdoor league title in that event since 2005.
Florida returns to action June 9-12, when it begins competition in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The four-day event takes place at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
