Florida head coach Mary Wise has joked throughout the team's preseason training camp about the desire to be able to press the pause button, and allow her more time to work with the team. For junior transfer Stephanie Ferrell (Los Angeles, Calif.), she's had her sights set on a different button.
Ferrell has been full throttle on fast-forward in the recent days of the team's two-week training camp. Ferrell who battled a minor injury has been forced to learn even quicker but, according to Wise, you wouldn't know it from her play on the court.
“Stephanie Ferrell has been battling an injury and was just cleared to play a few days ago,” Wise said. “She has really been going at warp speed learning all our new defensive and offensive systems. She is a physical player and hits the ball so hard. She is a great addition to our team.”
Wise credits Ferrell's strong understanding of all aspects of volleyball for her ability to adjust to the Florida system so quickly.
“She brings a really high volleyball IQ,” Wise said. “Although everything is new in terms of learning our terminology and our systems, she has been able to progress so quickly because she has a great sense of the game.”
Ferrell joins the Gators after three years (two seasons) at Hawaii, where she averaged 2.50 kills per set and 0.63 digs per set over the course of her career. She earned second-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors in 2009, making 31 starts in 35 matches.
Ferrell and the Gators begin their 2010 campaign Aug. 28-29, when they travel to Omaha, Neb., to participate in the prestigious AVCA Showcase, where they will face Big 12 Conference foes Iowa State and Nebraska.
