Florida Volleyball Notebook: Aug. 8
Monday, August 9, 2010 | Volleyball
The Florida volleyball team got its 2010 fall camp underway on Sunday evening, as all players reported to campus this weekend and enjoyed their annual team dinner at the home of head coach Mary Wise, with coaches, support staff and parents also in attendance.
The Gators will participate in a number of administrative events on Monday, such as receiving their new gear and taking team photos. Two-a-day practices will commence on Tuesday, as most days until the start of school will feature a morning session and an afternoon session.
“This is always my favorite part of the season,” Wise said. “We are beginning two weeks with the players and we have their undivided attention. What is special with this group is that all 15 players were on campus training during the summer with [strength and conditioning coach] Matt DeLancey. That will pay dividends down the road for our team.”
Sunday also marked Wise's birthday and the head coach was surprised with a cake and candles in her honor during the team dinner.
Florida, which in 2009 extended the nation's longest streak of consecutive 25-win seasons to 19, return five starters from a year ago, including AVCA Second-Team All-American Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.) and First-Team All-Southeastern Conference selection Kristy Jaeckel (Littleton, Colo.). The Gators will be seeking their 19th SEC Championship in program history and their 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Florida has advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 in 18 of the last 19 years.
The Gators begin their 2010 campaign Aug. 28-29, when they travel to Omaha, Neb., to participate in the prestigious AVCA Showcase, where they will face Big 12 Conference foes Iowa State and Nebraska.
