Saturday, October 8, 2011 | Women's Tennis
University of Florida junior Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) posted a pair of straight-set singles victories and advanced to the semifinals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Tennis Championships held at the Riviera Tennis Club.
The doubles team of Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) and Will got the Gators off to an exciting start, rallying from down 5-2 against Sacramento State's 16th-ranked pair of Delgado and Kapshai for an 8-5 victory.
“We got off to a shaky start, but it was an all-world finish!” Thornqvist praised of Oyen and Will's comeback.
Oyen and Will play Kansas' Morozova and Windom, ranked 33rd in the country, on Saturday in the quarterfinals. The semifinal round also will be contested on Saturday.
Will, who won the consolation singles draw of last year's national event, began the day with an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory against Ole Miss' Kristi Boxx, who knocked the Gator out of the first round of last year's main draw. Will then took down Duke's Beatrice Capra, the nation's top-ranked freshman, 6-2, 6-4.
The No. 2-ranked and only seeded player remaining in the semifinal, Will meets UCLA's Robin Anderson on Saturday at noon PT. The other semifinal match features Arizona State's 11th-ranked Jacqueline Cako, who dropped Gator senior Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) into the consolation draw with an opening-round three-set decision, and Kansas State's 35th-ranked Petra Niedemayerova, who knocked out UF's Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 16 on Friday.
Mather walked through to the semifinals of the consolation draw with a 7-5, 6-4 upset win against Virginia's Lindsey Hardenbergh after Baylor's Nina Secerbegovic withdrew with an injury. The Gator senior will play Miami's 25th-ranked Anna Bartenstein on Saturday at noon PT.
Embree and Mather also will team in the quarterfinals of the consolation doubles draw against Georgia Tech's sixth-ranked tandem of Lilley and O'Neill on Saturday at 3 p.m. PT.
