Taylor Unroe Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Tuesday, September 6, 2011 | Volleyball
Redshirt freshman libero Taylor Unroe (Muncie, Ind.) has been named the Southeastern Conference's Freshman of the Week for performances against No. 25 Florida State and in the Gators' trio of three-set sweeps en route to the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational title. This is Florida's first SEC weekly honor of the 2011 season.
Unroe was named to the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational All-Tournament team after combining for 29 digs against Jacksonville, FAU and Clemson. She added five assists and a nearly perfect serve reception rating. She had a 15-dig performance against then-No. 25 Florida State last Tuesday, adding four assists and a service ace in the three-set sweep of the Seminoles.
Unroe has only committed one serve reception error on the season, the least among SEC liberos. The Muncie, Ind. native already has 80 digs on the year and is third on the team with seven service aces. She averages a team-leading 3.48 digs per set.
Florida returns to action on Friday when the No. 7/6 Gators will participate in the second annual Nike Big Four Classic, hosted by Stanford University. Florida is scheduled to play at 11 p.m. EST/8 p.m. PST against No. 10 Texas and will match up against either No. 2 Penn State or No. 3 Stanford on Saturday. Times will be determined based on Friday's result. Fans can watch the matches on Stanford's website, as the Cardinal are providing live streaming video for fans who cannot make the trek to Palo Alto. The match will be carried live on GatorZone.com with Tom Collett.
