Freshman jumper Taylor Burke (Medina, Ohio) has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Women's Freshman of the Week after her remarkable performance in the Gator Invite this past weekend, the league offices in Birmingham, Ala. announced Tuesday.
Burke, who competed in just her second collegiate meet last weekend, captured the Gator Invite high jump title with a leap of 1.79m/5-10.50. The victory was the first of her collegiate career and this is the second consecutive weekly honor for the Gator program, as senior thrower Kemal Mesic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) was named the SEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week last week.
Burke's leap was the fourth-best indoor women's high jump all-time in Florida school history and currently puts her ninth nationally in the women's high jump. The Ohio native, who is also the starting goalkeeper for Florida's soccer team, ranks second among all freshmen in the nation this season in the high jump.
The Gators will look to build off their strong performances over the last two weeks by participating in the Big 12 vs. SEC Challenge, held on the campus of future SEC member Texas A&M. The Texas A&M Challenge takes place on January 27 & 28 at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
