Junior tailback Emmitt Smith rushed for a school-record 316 yards in a 27-21 homecoming defeat of New Mexico.
Smith carried 31 times, averaging 10.2 per tote (also a UF mark), and broke the previous single-game record of 224 yards that he set as a freshman in an upset win at Alabama two seasons earlier.
Of the six times in UF history a tailback has eclipsed the 200-yard mark, Smith accounted for half those efforts.
