
Florida's Betsy Smith Recognized on 2012 SEC Volleyball Community Service Team

Senior middle blocker Betsy Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) was named to the 2012 SEC Volleyball Community Service Team, announced on Tuesday by the league offices in Birmingham, Ala. This is Smith's third-consecutive year on the SEC Community Service Team.
The Atlanta native's community service projects include working with Baby Gators, Storybook Saturdays, Mebane Middle School, Shands Hospital, Shands Miracle Network, Buchholz High School Prime Time After School Program and Miracle on Main. She spearheaded Florida's efforts in the SEC Together We CAN food drive last fall and is currently assisting with Gator Tracks, a program developed to provide children throughout Gainesville with new shoes. Smith has over 300 volunteer hours during her five years on campus.
Smith, who is a member of Goodwill Gators, was also the president of Florida's SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) and previously served as SAAC treasurer (2010-11). She was Florida's representative on the SEC's conference-wide Student Athlete Advisory Committee during her junior season.
Smith, a Second Team All-SEC honoree, is ninth in the SEC with a .338 hitting percentage, tallying 192 kills in 2012. For her career, Smith has a .360 hitting percentage with 373 kills and is holding right around her career average in blocks, with .80 blocks/set in 2012 and .81 blocks/set for her career. Smith is a four-time Academic All-SEC selection and also received a 2012 CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District® nod, making her eligible for Academic All-America® honors. She will graduate in December with a double major in Business Administration and Political Science and a minor in Mass Communication, all while carrying a 3.87 GPA.
The 2012 SEC Champion Gators are in the midst of their 22nd consecutive 25-win season and begin action in the NCAA Tournament First Round on Friday when they face Tulsa at 7:30 p.m. ET in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. No. 14 seed Florida hosts Tulsa, College of Charleston and Miami (FL) in the Gainesville Sub-Regional Friday-Saturday, November 30-December 1.
