Beisel Named To 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Women's At-Large First Team
Thursday, June 7, 2012 | Women's Swimming & Diving
2012 SEC Female Swimmer of the Year and NCAA Champion in the 200 back, Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.), was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America ® Women's At-Large First Team, announced Wednesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Beisel becomes just the 11th Gator in Women's Swimming and Diving history to be named a Capital One Academic All-American, and the first since Tracy Caulkins in 1984, to be selected to the first team.
The only sophomore on the Capital One Academic All-America ® Division I Women's At-Large first team, Beisel becomes the fifth Academic All-America from the women's squad produced by Gators head coach Gregg Troy, and the very first female first-team selection for Troy.
The announcement marks the fourth consecutive year that a member of the Florida women's swimming and diving team has been named an Academic All-American as Teresa Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.) was named to the district team in 2011 and third team in 2010, and Gemma Spofforth (West Sussex, England) was named to the district team in 2009.
It is the first Academic All-America honor of Beisel's career, after the telecommunications major with a 3.61 GPA, led the Florida swimming and diving team to a 10th-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The Rhode Island native finished her sophomore campaign after she clinched the first NCAA Championship of her collegiate career with a 1:50.58 swim. A member of the U.S. National Team, and 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, Beisel claimed three SEC Championships in the 200 back, 200 IM and 400 IM, and set a new SEC 400 IM record in the process, 3:58.35, with the first sub four-minute performance of her career.
Nine different sports are represented on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women's At-Large first team. There are four swimmers, two gymnasts, two fencers and two skiers. Crew, lacrosse, golf and tennis each has one representative. There are 11 seniors, two juniors, a graduate student and a sophomore on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women's At-Large first team. Three of the 15 scholar-athletes on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women's At-Large first team have perfect 4.0 G.P.A.'s. The average G.P.A. is a 3.85.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
