Gators Successful on Day One of the 2012 Bedford Cup

The University of Florida men's tennis team fared well on the first day of the 2012 Bedford Cup on Friday, September 14 at the Ring Tennis Complex. UF went 2-1 in doubles action and won all but one of their singles matches.
“It was a great to be back in Gainesville and to be back on our home court,” said head coach Bryan Shelton. “It's great to have the all the teams from the state of Florida competing here, as well.”
The doubles tandem of Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Gordon Watson (Naples, Fla.) won their first round match, 8-2, against Stetson's Laurynas Antropikas and Egor Panyushkin. The pair suffered a setback in the round of 16, losing 8-5 to Florida A&M's C. Salif Kante and Takura Happy.
Fresh off their Southern Intercollegiate Doubles Championship, Mike Alford (Tampa, Fla.) and Florent Diep (Paris, France) defeated Florida State's Jordan Kelly- Houston and Michael Rinaldi to advance to the quarterfinals. Alford and Diep received a bye to the round of 16.
In singles action, Alford, Diep, and Watson all won their first round matchups. Luke Johnson (Leeds, England) lost 6-1, 6-3 to Omar Aly of Miami.
“I was very happy with the way Mike Alford finished in singles,” Shelton said. “He really put it all together and stepped up.”
