Former and Current Gators Prepare for Path to Moscow
Wednesday, June 19, 2013 | Track and Field
Drake Stadium will have an Orange and Blue tint to it, as 21 former and current Gator athletes take to Des Moines for the 2013 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Wednesday-Sunday, June 19-23.
The event serves as qualification for the 14th IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Moscow, Russia, August 10-18, 2013. The top three finishers in each event at the USA Outdoor Championships advance to Moscow, provided the athlete has the A standard in his or her respective event.
Five-time USTFCCCA National Men's Coach of the Year Mike Holloway is the head men's coach for Team USA this summer. Holloway was a member of the Team USA coaching staff at the 2012 Olympic Games, working as the sprints and hurdles coach in London.
Florida athletes take to the track beginning Thursday with the finals of the women's triple jump at 3 p.m. CT, as two-time SEC Outdoor Champion Ciarra Brewer (Union City, Calif.) takes to the runway. Brewer is the new Florida record holder in the event after a phenomenal sophomore campaign that saw her set the UF record, facility record and SEC meet record in the women's triple jump with her leap of 13.85m/45-5.25.
Competing on the men's side in the triple jump Thursday are multi-time NCAA Champions Will Claye and Omar Craddock, who hit the runway at 6 p.m. CT. Claye is a two-time Olympic medalist from the 2012 London Games, becoming the first American man since 1904 to medal in both long and triple jump at the same Olympics. Craddock ended his Gator tenure in fantastic fashion this year, capturing his third NCAA title in the men's triple jump, and his second straight outdoors, at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. less than two weeks ago.
One of the most prominent events for the Orange and Blue is the men's 400 meters, as five current and former Florida athletes will compete in the event Thursday at 5:45 p.m. CT with four already obtaining the A standard. Among those are three-time NCAA Champion and 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the men's 4x4, Tony McQuay, who won the men's 400 meters at the 2011 USA Outdoor Championships as just a sophomore at Florida.
There are 11 members of the 2013 Florida track & field rosters competing at the 2013 USA Outdoor Championships and they will be joined by Gator freshmen Destinee Gause (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Robin Reynolds (Miami, Fla.), who will compete in the USA Junior Outdoor Championships beginning Friday, June 21. The twosome will look to advance to the 2013 Pan American Junior Athletics Championship, taking place August 23-25 in Medellin, Columbia.
Also competing at her nation's championships is Ugonna Ndu (Newark, N.J.), who recently completed her eligibility at Florida with two First Team All-America honors at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Ndu, the Florida record holder in the women's 400-meter hurdles, will compete in the event at the 2013 AFN/Cross Rivers State All-Nigeria Athletics Championships. Heats are at 2:10 p.m. ET on Thursday, June 20 with the finals at 7:35 p.m. Friday, June 21.
