
Ryan Lochte Wins 13th Career World Championship Gold

Ryan Lochte added to his illustrious career with his third consecutive World Championship in the 200-meter individual medley during the fifth day of competition at the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. With the victory, Lochte tallied his 13th career World Championship gold medal and 21st overall.
Lochte, the world record holder in the 200 IM, came home in a scorching time of 1:54.98. After trailing during the first 100 meters, Lochte took the lead during the breaststroke leg and never looked back, winning the event by 1.3 seconds.
Immediately after the medal ceremony, Lochte returned to the pool for the 200 backstroke semi-final and delivered the event's second fastest swim of 1:55.88. Lochte enters tomorrow's final in medal contention and showed his ability to drop time from heat to heat after opening up the day with a prelim swim of 1:57.19.
Melani Costa-Schmid (Spain) guided her 4x200 free relay team to a fifth place finish and her third Spanish record of the meet (7:53.20). Costa-Schmid ends her meet with three top-five swims and Spain's second ever World Championships medal.
Junior Hilda Luthersdottir (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) earned a second swim in the 200 breaststroke after cranking out the 16th fastest prelim time of 2:28.12. Luthersdottir placed 15th in the event and posted a semi-final swim of 2:29.30.
Morning heats begin at 10 a.m. (Central European Time) or 4 a.m. (ET). Semi-finals and finals will start at 6 p.m. (CET) or 12 p.m. (ET).
