Pair of Gators Earn Career Best Finishes on the Seventh Day of Competition at the World Championships

Freshman Sinead Russell (Burlington, Ontario, Canada) and junior Hilda Luthersdottir (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) enjoyed their highest career finishes in international events during the seventh day of competition at the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. In addition, Ryan Lochte wrapped up his competition with his sixth top-six performance of the meet.
Russell placed seventh in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:10.46, topping her eighth place finish in the event at the 2012 Olympics. Luthersdottir earned her second semi-final swim of the meet, placing 13th in the 50 breaststroke with an Icelandic record of 31.37. In the prelims, Luthersdottir took the last qualifying spot, placing 16th with a time of 31.50.
Fresh off one of the most impressive days in swimming history in which Lochte won two events and finished with the fastest 100 butterfly semi-final time, the former Gator great showed that he is human on his 29th birthday. Lochte settled for a sixth place finish with a time of 51.58.
In the final day of competition, junior Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) and sophomore Dan Wallace (North Berwick, Scotland) will compete in the 400 individual medley. The event will consist of a prelim round and a final round.
Beisel, a two-time Olympic medalist and 14-time All-American, earned her first career Olympic medal at the 2012 Games with a silver medal performance in the 400 IM in a career low time of 4:31.27, which was .15 seconds away from the current American record. Beisel, the 2011 World Champion in the 400 IM, is a favorite to medal in the event. She is currently seeded fourth in a field that sees a one-second separation between the five fastest qualifiers.
Wallace, a four-time All-American, dropped his personal best in the 400 IM (4:15.22) with a silver medal finish at the British Championships to earn him a spot on the British World's roster. The sophomore enters the meet with the 15thfastest 400 IM in the world this year.
Universal Sports Network and NBC are currently airing 70 hours of premier pool action during the course of the week. Morning heats begin at 10 a.m. (Central European Time) or 4 a.m. (ET). Semi-finals and finals will start at 6 p.m. (CET) or 12 p.m. (ET).
