Gators Capture Doubles Title, Oyen Advances to Singles Final at Duke Fab Four Invite
Sunday, September 15, 2013 | Women's Tennis
Florida's Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) and Belinda Woolcock (Victoria, Australia) won the Duke Fab Four Invitational BLACK doubles draw and Oyen advanced to the final of the singles BLACK draw to highlight the Gator's play during the second day of action at the Duke Fab Four Invite held at the Cary Tennis Center on Saturday.
Oyen and Woolcock defeated Duke's Ester Goldfeld and Marianne Jodoin, 8-7 (7-5), to claim UF's first individual title of the season.
Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) and Kourtney Keegan (Roswell, Ga.) paired for an 8-6 victory against Texas' Breaunna Addison and Ratnika Batra in the third-place match of the BLUE draw.
Oyen defeated Alabama's Emily Zabor, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the BLACK singles draw, before earning a tough 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win against Miami's No. 52 Stephanie Wagner in the semifinals. The Gator senior will play North Carolina's Hayley Carter for the title on Sunday at 9 a.m.
Janowicz, Keegan and Woolcock each went 1-1 in their respective singles matches, as Janowicz earned a spot in the WHITE draw third-place match, while Keegan will play in the WHITE draw fifth-place match and Woolcock in the BLUE draw fifth-place match, all beginning at 9 a.m.
Quoting Head Coach Roland Thornqvist
“We took home our first trophy of the year today which is always nice. I thought Sofie and Belinda played really good tennis. They are doing it the right way, they are imposing their will on the other team. They were very active at the net. Both of them are very powerful. We've only really practiced one day before this tournament so I'm very pleased with how they are interacting already.”
“Overall in doubles, we are hitting the ball well, we're creative and that bodes well for the rest of the year.”
“In singles we had another great day. Sofie is in the final and won a three-setter in the semifinals. She showed a lot of grit. She played really well for a set and half and then lost it a little bit, but she was excellent in retrieving balls and playing defense when she had too; just showed a lot of heart.”
“The other three lost one singles match and won one match today but played really well. We continued to hit the ball and competed to get better. It's nice to see our ball contact is excellent. We're making a few too many errors at this but we've just started practice, the consistency will come. I'm just happy to see that we have good ball-striking ability.”
