BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Gator volleyball sophomore right side Alex Holston is this week's SEC Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman middle blocker Rhamat Alhassan is the SEC Freshman of the Week, announced by the league Monday afternoon.
Alhassan and Holston paced No. 9 Florida as the Gators added two conference sweeps in the O'Dome to maintain their clean slate in the SEC at 6-0, while improving to 12-3 overall on the season.
Under Alhassan and Holston's watch, Florida pumped out its second-best offensive efficiency in conference play (.395) against the Aggies Sunday, while the Gators' potent defense limited Texas A&M to a .119 hitting efficiency. Holston led all players on the court against Texas A&M, slammed down 13 kills, scooped up a career-tying seven digs and posted three blocks in the three-set win as the Gators improved to 3-2 on the season against top-25 opponents.
Alhassan, who led Florida over the weekend with a .467 clip, 4.00 points per set and 1.67 blocks per set, notched 10 kills and six blocks in Sunday's showdown against the Aggies after turning in a staggering .636 hitting efficiency as the Gators blanked Georgia Friday to open the weekend home stand. For Alhassan, her .636 clip against UGA marked her sixth time this season above a .600 efficiency, the second in SEC play. She additionally registered a team-best 11.0 points against the Bulldogs with her eight kills and four roofs in the match.
Alhassan, who entered the weekend fourth in the nation with her .475 hitting efficiency, ranks first in the league with her clip and third in SEC play with 1.32 blocks per set. Holston is fifth in the SEC with 3.84 kills per set and 4.39 points per set. Florida has dropped just one set in SEC play, and has five sweeps otherwise.
