LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Florida volleyball senior defensive specialist Taylor Unroe is one of 12 recipients of the 2014 American Volleyball Coaches Association Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship, announced this week. The scholarship provides the opportunity for up-and-coming volleyball coaches to attend their first AVCA Convention with the scholarship money used to pay for convention registration and hotel costs.
Unroe, the 2013 SEC Libero of the Year and an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention player last season, ranks second all-time in Florida history in career digs (1,479) and aspires to be a coach when her collegiate eligibility is up with the Gators at the conclusion of the 2014 campaign.
“This scholarship means a lot to me because I will have the opportunity to learn about the coaching world; I'll get to network and meet a lot of people who will help me further my career,” Unroe said. “I want to go into coaching because I have been playing for so long and have a lot of knowledge about the game that I want to spread to others. I also want to develop amazing people and use the experiences I've gone through in my life to help my players.”
“I always believed Taylor would make a great coach -- not just because she started playing at age four like many growing up in Muncie, Ind., but because she is one of the most empathetic, kind and compassionate individuals I have ever worked with,” remarked Gator head coach Mary Wise.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be active AVCA members who are attending their first AVCA Convention. A selection committee reviews the applications and makes their decisions based on academics, contributions to the sport of volleyball on and off the court, a professional letter of recommendation, and a personal written submission outlining their desire to attend the AVCA Annual Convention and their aspirations in coaching.
In her senior season as a Gator, Unroe has been a staple of UF's veteran back row and aided the No. 8 Florida squad to a 17-3 overall record and an undefeated 11-0 mark in SEC play. The Gators own a 12-match win streak heading into a match-up with Tennessee in Knoxville Sunday.
This year's AVCA Convention will be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma from December 17-21, featuring over 70 educational sessions with more than 2,000 volleyball coaches expected to be in attendance.
