No. 16 Florida Women's Golf Takes Top-3 Spot After 36 Holes of Allstate Sugar Bowl
Tuesday, February 25, 2014 | Women's Golf
Due to inclement weather canceling round one of the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship, all teams competing played 36 holes at English Turn Golf & Country Club today. The No. 16 Florida women's golf team sits in a solid third place after two rounds of golf, highlighted by freshman Maria Torres who matched a career-best 70 on the second 18 today, finishing three-under, T6 individually.
Five of the six Gators participating in the Allstate Sugar Bowl placed in the top-25 individually, making an impressive 42 birdies as a team. Florida senior Elcin Ulu fired a season-low 70 on the first 18 holes and rolled off a stellar seven birdies over two rounds today. Competing as an individual, freshman Karolina Vlckova paced the Gators with a team-high nine birdies on the day and placed T18 on the player leaderboard.
The Florida squad sits a manageable 10 strokes off the lead, just six strokes behind No.1 Southern Cal, and looks to the final round to compete for the top spot.
Head Coach Emily Glaser Says: “The girls played well today and I am proud of them. We let a few get away at the end; it seemed to be a bit of fatigue because it was a tough day. The course was really wet. We played lift, clean and place and this helped, but you still had to be precise with your contact. The team did a great job of managing their way around this course and it was a real team effort today. We are looking forward to being in the last group tomorrow.”
