Thursday, May 15, 2014 | Track and Field
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Florida junior thrower Jayla Bostic turned in a fifth-place showing in finals of the women's hammer throw and classmate Brittany Harrell opened up heptathlon competition Thursday to kick off the 2014 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the Gators.
Bostic posted a 57.49m/188-7 performance in the hammer for No. 1 Florida's first four points of the championships, guiding the Orange and Blue to a fifth-place standing on the women's side following one event final at the Kentucky Track and Field Complex. Harrell worked her way to sixth place (3,249) in the heptathlon after the first four events, capping the day on a high note with an all-conditions best of 24.92 (+3.1 wind) in the 200m.
Harrell will get the day started for the Gators Friday at 1:30 p.m. to finish out the hep with the long jump, javelin and 800m, while defending men's hammer champion Kyle Strawn and fellow thrower David Levin will compete in prelims and finals of the hammer. Friday running events kick off at 6:15 p.m. for the Gators with men's and women's 800m prelims. Florida owns nine SEC outdoor championships, four on the men's side ('53, '56, '87, '10) and five in women's action ('92, '97, '98, '03,'09).
HOLLOWAY'S TAKE
“I think we had a good day. I was really pleased with Jayla Bostic. Coming in she was ranked ninth (in the SEC), and she finished fifth. Brittany Harrell had a tough day, but she's a fighter. She fought, fought and she's sixth going into tomorrow. She has a chance to do really well; she has a very strong day with the long jump, javelin and 800m – two of her best events in the whole heptathlon. We're going to go back to the hotel, rest her up, get back out here tomorrow and get after it a little bit better than we did today.”
