LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Florida senior outside hitter éiva Recek was named one of 12 recipients for the American Volleyball Coaches Association Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship Monday morning. In its seventh year, the scholarship provides the opportunity for up-and-coming volleyball coaches to attend their first AVCA Convention with the scholarship money used to pay for convention registration and hotel costs.
Recek is the second straight Gator to be a part of the C4C program, as 2014-15 senior defensive specialist Taylor Unroe attended convention last year as a C4C scholarship recipient prior to landing her first coaching job at George Mason University in Virginia.
“When éiva made the decision to pursue a coaching career in the U.S., I couldn't have been more excited for her -- and our profession. This is a young woman who could help any college program today. She has elite level volleyball IQ, a strong work ethic, and perhaps most importantly, the ability to get along with anyone. She is one of the most well-liked players to have come through our program,” said Florida Head Coach Mary Wise.
Recek has eclipsed 1,000 career kills as a Gator (1,105) and has been a consistent pin hitter for the Orange and Blue during her tenure in Gainesville. Named the 2012 AVCA National Freshman of the Year, Recek additionally picked up All-SEC and AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honors as both a freshman (2012) and sophomore (2013). She's been a part of two SEC Championships for the Gators in 2012 and 2014, has played in the NCAA Tournament all three years of her Florida career thus far, and has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to Gainesville as a member of the Slovenian National Team.
Recek has a staggering 25 career double-doubles and was one of the University of Florida's Outstanding International Student Award recipients a year ago. Recek had a career match for the Slovenian National Team in European qualifiers this past summer where she scored 22 points against France to help give Slovenia its first ever bid to the European Championships. Recek then joined Slovenia in the Netherlands in September for EuroVolley.
Thus far in 2015, Recek owns six double-doubles, most recently Sunday at Auburn (14K, 16D) with a career-tying six blocks and ranks third this season for the Gators with 2.88 kills per set.
In order to be eligible for the C4C Scholarship, applicants must be active AVCA members who are attending their first AVCA Convention. A selection committee reviews the applications and makes their decisions based on academics, contributions to the sport of volleyball on and off the court, a professional letter of recommendation, and a personal written submission outlining their desire to attend the AVCA Annual Convention and their aspirations in coaching.
This year's AVCA Convention will be held in Omaha, Nebraska from December 16-20, featuring over 70 educational sessions with more than 2,000 volleyball coaches expected to be in attendance.
