Owens, Parrish Better School Records After Successful Day in Fayetteville, Ames

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The No. 2 Gator track and field athletes made the most of their opportunities Friday in Ames at the ISU Classic and Fayetteville at the Tyson Invitational as Florida is half way through its final weekend of indoor regular-season competition. Senior distance runner Mark Parrish lowered his school record in the 5K (13:41.87) to lead a distance corps that had PRs across the board at the Lied Rec Center in Ames, while senior hurdler Bridgette Owens cruised to a season-best 8.02 to improve upon her school record in the race at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville.
All seven Gators who ran the 5K in Ames notched PRs and three men ran top-10 marks in school history. Behind Parrish, Jimmy Clark (14:04.53) and Eddie Garcia (14:14.84) clocked the fourth and ninth-fastest times in Florida history.
Owens helped the Orange and Blue light up the track in Fayetteville, as UF's quartermilers were also on fire Friday evening. Sophomore Nick Uruburu used a 46.33 PR to jump on to UF's all-time top-10 list in the 400m, while Kyra Jefferson (52.28) notched the No. 4 mark in UF history on the women's side in her race.
In the field, senior Jayla Bostic used a season-best weight throw (20.76m/68-1.5) to finish sixth overall, while speedster Shayla Sanders (7.24) closed out the night with some momentum after a season-best 60-meter dash performance.
Gator fans will once again be able to keep up with all the track and field action in Fayetteville through SEC Network+, as the network will live stream Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. ET. Flotrack ($) is carrying a stream of the competition this weekend from the Lied Recreation Center in Ames.
HEARING OUT HOLLOWAY
“We did a good job tonight, I'm very pleased with Mark (Parrish), who had a new school record in the 5K, Jimmy (Clark), Eddie (Garcia) and the two ladies (Lauren Brasure, Devin McDermott) in the 5K did awesome as well. Bridgette (Owens) was phenomenal tonight, she came out and executed just as we asked of her each time, resulting in her school record as well. Jayla (Bostic) came out and had a new season best in the weight throw; she has been working hard. I'm also so proud of Shayla (Sanders). She really stuck her nose in and competed hard tonight.
I am ecstatic about Kyra (Jefferson) and Nick (Uruburu) in the 400m. It's unbelievable what they did. For Kyra, it was the first indoor quartermile of her career here, Nick had a half-second PR. It was also a solid run for Destinee (Gause).
We have some work to do in the other events; we don't know what's going on, but whatever it is, it's my job -- and our staff's -- to figure it out. We're looking forward to coming out tomorrow and getting some more things done. We'll tweak a few things, focus and look to gain momentum as we move towards the postseason.”
