GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida women's swimming and diving team enters this week's Southeastern Conference Championships No. 4 in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America rankings, CSCAA officials announced on Monday.
The conference meet begins tomorrow in Auburn, Ala. in the James E. Martin Aquatic Center and will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 21. The prelims will begin at 11 a.m. ET each day and the finals will begin at 7 p.m. Diving prelims will begin at 12 p.m. on Tuesday and then 2 p.m. every other day. In addition, finals will start at 6:30 p.m. on the first of competition.
A season ago, UF ended the conference championship in third place behind Georgia (1,589) and Texas A&M (1,204). Florida's women won three SEC event championships for the second-consecutive year.
In dual meets this season, the Gators were 6-2, with Southeastern Conference victories over Arkansas, LSU, Kentucky, Auburn and Tennessee. UF's lone loss came against currently ranked No. 2 Georgia.
In the top-5, California, Georgia, Stanford, Florida and Texas A&M were tabbed as such. Other SEC schools in the poll include No. 7 Auburn, No. 10 UT, No. 18 Missouri and No. 19 LSU.
UF's women's squad is looking to snap a five-year SEC title drought, as the Gators last won a conference title in 2009. At that meet, Florida captured six event titles and was led by Gemma Spofforth as she was named the SEC Female Swimmer of the Year.
Up next, Florida hosts a Last Chance Meet in the O'Dome from Feb. 28-Mar. 1. This will be the final time for any Gators to set qualifying times for the NCAA Championships. The women's NCAA meet will be held from Mar. 19-21 in Greensboro, N.C., meanwhile, UF's divers will look to qualify for NCAA's in Athens, Ga. from Mar. 9-11 at the NCAA Zone B Diving regional meet.
Founded in 1922, the CSCAA is a professional organization of coaches dedicated to serving and providing leadership for the advancement of collegiate swimming and diving. The CSCAA Division I Poll Committee will produce in-season rankings of the 25 best performing teams in rank order at the time of each poll. The poll is not designed to predict the results of the NCAA Championship, but rather which teams would win head-to-head against other teams in the country. Rankings are based on performances that have taken place since the previous poll and include invites as well as dual meets.
