Dendy, Miller Punch Tickets to Eugene; Day One at NCAA East Preliminary in the Books
Friday, May 29, 2015 | Track and Field
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A pair of veteran national champions in seniors Marquis Dendy and Fawn Miller punched their tickets to the NCAA Track and Field Championship finals site on the first day of the East Preliminary at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Dendy with a new long jump facility record at 8.02m/26-5 and Miller with a 48.80m/160-1 javelin heave as the duo will aim to go back-to-back in Eugene in their respective events.
While Dendy and Miller highlighted the day by advancing to Eugene and Historic Hayward Field, 12 of the Gators' 14 first-round runners advanced to quarterfinals of their respective events in Jacksonville with the chance to add to UF's NCAA Championships roster through the next two days.
Junior Gino Hall (45.94, 400m) and sophomore T.J. Holmes (51.48, 400H) both notched season-best marks Thursday, while junior Najee Glass will enter quarterfinals of the 400m seeded first following his 45.38 first-round performance.
Freshman thrower Lloydricia Cameron had a stellar career-best outing in the shot put prelim earlier in the afternoon, finishing 14th with her 15.72m/51-7 PR, just short of the top-12 finish she needed to advance to Eugene, ensuring a bright future ahead for the first-year Gator.
Friday's competition kicks off at noon for the Gators when Cameron swings back into action in the discus, her second event at the East Preliminary. Running events get started at 5 p.m. with the first round of the 100 and 110 hurdles.
A contingent of 36 Gators, 19 men and 17 women, are representing the Orange and Blue and vying for top-12 finishes in their respective events this weekend, aiming to advance to the 2015 NCAA Championship finals site in Eugene June 10-13. Twelve athletes and 12 relays from both the East and West (Austin, Texas) Preliminaries will advance to Eugene.
HEARING OUT HOLLOWAY
“I thought we had a solid day. Obviously we had a couple things go wrong today, but that's part of athletics. These things happen, but we have great people and a great team. This is a situation where we have to pick each other up and that was my message to the team. We have two more days of competition to focus in on. This is the first round of the NCAA Championships and we can't take anything for granted.”
